CAMPBELL FINED.
NEW GUARD'S LEADER
References to Mr. Lang Deemed " Insulting." MAGISTRATE'S JUDGMENT. (United P.A.—EWctric Telegraph—'Copyright) (Received 2.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, this day. Colonel Eric Campbell, leader of the New Guard, was fined £2, in default five days' imprisonment, for using insulting words concerning the Premier, Mr. J. T. Lang. The magistrate, Mr. Laidlaw, in his judgment said: "I have no doubt that at least some of the words defendant used ill reference* to the Premier were of an insulting nature. The evidence was sufficiently convincing to satisfy me, beyond reasonable doubt, that police officers were offended by the words used.
"It is difficult to assess the proper penalty, but, having regard to all the circumstances, the maximum penalty being £5, I consider £2 appropriate."
