STABLE AND TRACK NOTES.

SURE TO IMPROVE. Te Money ran a surprisingly good race iu the Takapuna Cup. She was always out making the pace and stayed on well to get third money at the finish. This mare got badly galloped on in that event ami could not fulfil her engagements on the second day. Te Money has previously shown indications of staying 011 and is a likely winner over a distance before long. FAILURE OF LEITRIM. Leitrim was solidly supported in his races at Takapuna last week, but the best lie could do was to register two thirds out of three starts. He never seemed to be galloping kindly in the early part of his races and failed to show the same dash as he did last season. This horse has been very disappointing since lie won at vVaipa | in Decemoer and his form is hard to understand. wiLl do better. Murmorate, the half-sister to Mosaic and Mosque lias always sliowu speed m lier races. She was one of the leaders into the straight in the Trial Stakes at Tukapuii:'. on JL'riday, but failed to sustain her effort and finisned fourth. On Saturday Marmorate, who was the outsider of the field, beat all but Marshland in the Moana Handicap, and if she continues to go on improving she should quickly lose her maiden ,-tatus. WORTH FOLLOWING. Aga Khan, a three-year-old gelding by Chief Kuler from Lugano, was most unlucky in the Trial Stakes at Takapum jon Friday. He jumped away well, but just [ before reaching the top got badly inter- | l'ered with and lost las position. HowSever, he came again, and linislied third. Only lor the trouble he encountered he would have won. This was his second race and he has some speed, and should be worth following from now on. HIGH COMEDY'S SUCCESS. High Comedy after running second to Arisus iu tile Boiven Handicap at Ellorslie was taken to 1 renth-am, but failed to get into the money. ft is stated that lie bruised a loot and that was the reason for him failing to keep his engagement in tUe Stewards' Handicap on the first day at Takapuna. On Saturday High Comedy was made second, favourite for the Suburban Handicap. Huntingdon and he ran away from the field, and at the entrance to the straight Huntingdon went wide and High Comedy got a nice run through on tne rails to score in very easy fashion. MARECHAL'S PROSPECTS. Marechal lias improved greatly this season and he snov.ed that nis dual success at Thames was no fluke by the manner in which he accounted for the Stewards' Handicap at Takapuna on Friday. He was always one of the leaders and stayed on well to beat .Refresher by a cshotr head. On the second day, with a rise of 111b, Huntingdon and High Comedy set a fast pace, and he never got near them, being fifth at the finish. The half-brother to Awarere, however, was not disgraced, and he should do well on the country circuit during the next few weeks. WHAKAPARA DISAPPOINTS. The good form displayed by Whakapara earlier 111 the season encouraged backers to make the Kilbroney three-year-old a warm favourite for the Hauraki Handicap on Friday last at Takapuna. However, after having every chance, Whakapara failed to get in the money and could do 110 better in the Rangitoto Handicap 011 the following day. Whakapara, who has had a failamount of racing, did not look over bright when he went to the post 011 the final dav ® and it is just possible that he may require ' , a short rest to enable him to freshen up * and regain his true form. I AN EASY VICTORY. < Ganpat scored an impressive win iu the j * Ferry Handicap, finishing on very strongly 1 from a long way back, and nothing had <' r a chance with him over the concluding •' . stages. On the second day he contested ' 3 the Anniversary Handicap, and went ' 1 another good race. I'aganelli, who drew r the inside .position, jumped away much 5 better than he did, and though Ganpat . made up u bit of the leeway he was unable to make any impression on Paganclli . and they finished in the order named. , Ganpat, though still eligible for hack - races, should soon work iiie way out of . that class. 1 ! RACING CONSISTENTLY. Tarporley has always raced well at Taka- ' puna. In the spring he finished fourth in 1 the High-weight Handicap and won on the : second day. Last week he again ran two 'j good races in similar events on the same ' course. He was very unlucky 011 the first * day, for he met with interference just ' before reaching the back stretch and was . nearly down. Despite that occurrence lie ■ went on and was narrowly defeated by Great Emblem. The mishap no doubt cost him the race. On Saturday he was again narrowly beaten by Dominican. Tarporley has been a most consistent horse since lie commenced racing. <1 A PROMISING HACK. .v Marshland, a filly by Valkyrian from " Malaria, trained by E. Pope at Takanini. ' made her first appearance in the Trial Stakes at Takapuna 011 Friday. She ran most promisingly, finishing fifth. On Sat- ' urday Marshland was not greatly fancied for the Moana Handicap, and she was a good way back when the top was reached, but from then on gradually improved her " position and was handy at the turn. She " then came 011 to win in good style. Marsh- 0 land is certainly a very promising filly. w Her dam. Malaria, is by Quarantine from " Minsk, the dam of the Grand National & winner, Carinthia, Fedora, and Currajong, p] CHIEF JOY'S EASY WIN. Chief Joy won the Zealandia Handicap o) at Takapuna 011 Friday after lying in behind the leaders all the way to the turn, where he came through to score one of the easiest victories of the meeting. On Saturday be was well fancied for the Takapuna Jockey Club Handicap and was going well until he got pocketed . near the top, with the result that 'he lost his position. However, he finished on fast in the straight to get fourth. More judiciously ridden he would have been a great ileal more troublesome. He is very well and should not toe long in successfully compassing more than a mile journey, which 'has been his best so far. AN IMPROVED HORSE. Great Emblem ran his best race to date when he accounted for the Orewa High- j weight Handicap at Takapuna on Friday, j beating a warm favourite in Tarporley. He was always well placed during the running and stayed on exceptionally well under pressure. This gelding also ran well in a similar event on the second day, when he was narrowly beaten into third place. Great Emblem is an Australian-bred geld- | ing, and showed some promise in the spring when he ran third in a race at Avondale. He was subsequently spelled, and upon his return was put in L. Manson's charge, thus giving that trainer his first success. Great Emblem is now staying on much better than formerly and further successes over a distance should go his way before the season is much further advanced. ANTIQUE RETURNS TO FORM. One of the fittest horses racing at Takapuna was Antique, who for the second year in succession captured the Cup. He was made favourite and, going past the stands, ran to the front, but later allowed Te Money and Grand Talk to make the pace along the back. When the straight was reached Gray let him go and he was not by any means doing his best to win by the best part of three lengths. On Saturday he carried 9.6 in the Jockey Club Handicap, and he again took charge in the straight, and was only cantering over the last bit to stall off Royal Artist, who came with a rattle in the la.st half-furlong to get within half a length of him. Antique is in great fettle at present and he should add further good stakes to his credit before the season is much older.
