BOWLING.

HONOURING THE CHAMPIONS. PRACTICAL ALTERATIONS SUGGESTED. ENJOYABLE ANNIVERSARY TOURNAMENTS.

I — j (By TIIUNDLER.)

The pavilion and grounds of the Auckland Bowling Club, itlie parent club of the city, and also of the Dominion, have been the scene of a great number of interesting ceremonies during the club's existence of 71 years, but nothing before has been quite so original in its conception as the public welcome which was given on Saturday to 'the club's winning ln recent Dominion tournament, ihe committee hit upon the happy thought of adding very considerably to the importance of this welcome by inviting the co-operation of all the previous Dominion champions belonging to this centre, and also to four winners from other centres who are now resident here, Messrs. E. . Ul i y Tir (South Auckland) and Mr. W. Spiller (Christchurch). This made eighteen in all, and there would have been four more but fof the fact that Messrs. W. Bremner and C. E. Ilardley, the winners in the recent Dominion pairs, were engaged at their own club, and also the other members of their rink, who won m Wellington three years ago, as well as Messrs. .J. S. Kilgour, the singles champion of 1014, and G. L. Gladding, the Champion pairs lead of 1030, were still engaged in the rink championship of the Auckland Centre, then proceeding at Remuera. 1 lie speeches were in excellent taste, and eacn member of the large gathering would endorse every word speken by Mr. 11. M. liacket, vice-president of the Auckland Club, and Mr. James Pascoe, president of e Auckland Centre, in welcoming and congratulating the winners. In the course of a particularly happy reply to the welcoming addresses and the enthusiastic reception from the assembly, litoessor Walker introduced three debatable subjects on which .there has been a strong difference of opinion, and on which the New Zealand Council is sure to receive numerous representations at their annual meeting next July. In urging two games each day in the rinks, instead of three, the professor brought up a few of the arguments which appeared in this column on Junuary 23, while he was awav, and the position appears to be that 'if Auckland again supports two games only this system will bccome permanent. His suggestion that the greens committee should decide whether the greens are to be watered overnight, instead of leaving it to the local greenkeeper or superintendent, seems to be on all fours with the frequent criticism in our own centre tournaments, that the question of putting scrim on the greens during changeable weather should be controlled by the greens committee, and not the local authority. I here is sure to be something said about both questions at the annual meeting of the Auckland Centre. 1 iofessor Walker's very practical suggestion regarding the choice of a green during the final stages of a tournament should be well supported, for occasionally there has appeared to be a danger that individual preference might outweigh the concerted opinion of those best entitled to judge between the condition of the greens and the other appointments that the clubs can provide. There is no necessity to supersede _ the final right of the committee to cecide, but the suggestion that the decision should only bo made after consultation with those who have been actually playing on the various greens might prevent a repetition of what happened in Chrifltchurch, where the finals were played on a green that was inferior to those that had been tested during the earlier matches. The Anniversary Day Tournaments. Nobody could have wished for nicer weather conditions than those prevailing an Friday, and this made the numerous tournaments very pleasant. The second :lay of the champion rink tournament. liowever, opened in a very inauspicious manner, rain delaying the resumption of play for over an hour. However, another three rounds were completed before evening drew in, and considerable interest was taken in the matches by a large bank of spectators. The surprise packet was provided bj" a Rawliiti rink, in charge of D. C. Murray, ivho reached the semi-final, after two specially notable wins. In the fourth •ound they defeated Norrie Bell's Taka[>una rink, after a tie on the twenty-first lead, and in the fifth round they survived i splendid contest against J. Gardiner [Otahuhu). However, they were overwhelmed in the last round on Saturday, when they met R. McMaster (Stanley), -he latter s rink getting such a heavy lead ;hat the spectators concentrated their in;erest on the other match, between Robertson (Onehunga) and Russell (Kemuera). If the former had defeated the two lifer le would have got the bye in the next ound, and thus got into the final, but ifter holding a commanding lead, he and lis third were unfortunate in their drives, ilmost any one of which would have given ;hem a win, - and Remuera won by one joint. This left the Remuera rink as two ifers and Stanley as one lifers, to play >ut the final or finals to-day. The initial tournament at West End, ■o inaugurate the Hardley Memorial Shield, turned out a great success, twelve slub rinks competing. This beautKul -rophy, financed by the club members as i memorial to the late Mr. J. W. Hardley, was appropriately won by a rink in charge >f Irving Clarke, one of the club's strong;st supporters, and each member of the vinning rink received a miniature cup jreseilted by Mrs. Hardley. In addition to the final in the rink ihampionship to-day, the fixtures for this veek comprise the veterans' reunion tonorrow, pairs at Epsom and rinks at \vondale and Edendale on Wednesday, md pairs at Onehunga and rinks at Mount \lbert and Waiuku on Thursday. The Rotorua tournament commences next Monday, and on the following day there s an open rinks tournament at Pukekohe, or which the entries close on Saturday. RINKS TOURNAMENT. REMUERA GREEN.
