The remarkable response' which British income tax-payers made to the request for prompt payment of the large instalment due on January 1 is shown by Treasury figures to have been more than maintained in the second week of the quarter. During the week ended January 16 the income tax collected amounted to £28,500,000, an increase of £18,000,000, or approximately 175 per cent over the amount collected in the corresponding week last year. The total amount collected between January 1 and January 10 was nearly £50,000,000, compared with £22,000,000 in the first 17 days last year. The collection of su'tax to date is equally satisfactory. During the week ended January 10, £7,350,000 was received, compared with £2,450,000 in the corresponding week last year. The total amount received in the first 16 days of the year was £15,000,000, showing an increase of £7,000,000 over the total received in the corresponding period of 1931. Bankers continue to receive reports from the Continent in regard to the favourable impression created by the tax collections. The inflow of revenue has enabled a reduction of £35,2-15,000 in the floating debt on the week.
