NEW FORCE IN INDIA. Action to Meet "Suffragette" Movement. NOTED AGITATOR ARRESTED. (I nited r.A.-Eloctric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 12.30 p.m.) CALCUTTA, January 20. Lately women have been taking an aggressive part in Indian politics, and the police have been forced into embarrassing situations dealing with women pickets and unlawful processions reminiscent of suffragette days in London. An otlieial effort to deal with the situation is revealed in an advertisement in the Press to-day for women recruits tor enlistment in the uniformed branch of the Delhi police on the same terms as men. They will deal onlv with womenfolk. Air. Sen Gupta, the Bengal Nationalist leader and former Mayor of Calcutta, was arrested to-day under the emergency regulations on his arrival at Bombay from Hngland. As an agitator lie has attained some notoriety, and has been frequently sentenced in the" past for sedition and other offences. He openly advocates a fresh struggle. A Peshawar telegram states that there are many indications that the Peshawar district is undergoing a gradual return to normal conditions, and that there is increasing distrust of Congress. Arrears in revenue are being paid regularly, and many Red Shirt uniforms, which are the outward badge of Congress in this province, have been handed in. Picketing is ah-o decreasing.
