HOSPITAL FINANCE.

RELIEF OF UNEMPLOYMENT, PROPOSAL FOR CONFKREXCJ3. An address oil the liimnce-s o' the Auckland Hospital Board was given by Mr. G. 'J'. Parvin, Franklin's :-e[irescntativc on the board, to tlio Franklin County Council yesterday. Mr. Parvin referred to the deficit on the year's working, and pointed out that the Government had made available £20,000 to assist the board. It appeared as though tile board would have to repay the amount by striking a supplementary rate. In the past five years unemployment relief had cost the board £108,000. and next year he was of opinion the board would have to provide about £100,000 for the purpose. In thanking Mr. Parvin, tlio chairman, Mr. J. N. Massey, M.P., remarked that all members of the council were of opinion that relief should be a direct charge on the Consolidated Fund. In Frankton the ratepayers had been called on to pay an increased levy, but the past winter had been a heavy one from the point of unemployment relief. It was the duty of the Government to see whether some other system could not be evolved to make such relief a charge on the country. The council decided to request (lie board to call a conference of its contributing local authorities to consider the question of unemployment.
