"FOLLOW-ON" SENTENCE COMPETITION

HIGH STANDARD OF WORK RECEIVED. OUTDOOR GAMES WANTED FOR NEXT WEEK. Dear Boys and Girls, — Those who tried their hands at making "follow-on" sentences found the task a little more difficult than they first anticipated, nevertheless it was splendid fun. Judging by some of the entries, competitors searched through the dictionary in order to find some words that would fit into their chain, because some of the words encountered in the entries were certainly ones that are not used in every-day conversation. Heavy entries were received, and I am pleased to say that the standard of the work was on the whole very high. The length of the follow-on sentences was not great in any case, but this was compensated for by the fact that all the entries read sensibly. The first of the half-crown prizes was awarded to Dudley Cole, of Kaitieke, who obviously put a lot of time into working out his entry. Another good piece of work upon which a lot of time must have been expended was submitted by Eulalie Purdom, who was placed second on the awards list. Charles Taylor, our 0.5.8. member from Waikiekie, was awarded the third halfcrown prize, whilst the remaining half-crown went to Stanley Perkins. Many boys and girls have gone away from their homes during the holiday period and I am sure that they are having splendid fun by the sea and in the green paddocks. Even those who have stayed at home will have visited the parks and playgrounds, and everyone will know of good games that can be played out of doors. For to-day's competition I want to see who can send me the best out-door game, with full directions how to play it. Of course the best entries will be published, and so all readers will have a chance of learning _^^^*(B some new way of passing the happy hours out in the sunshine. For fur- [~ sijjtj. ther particulars see the competition announcement which appears elsewhere **^^^' on this page. "^^
