LIBEL REFUTED.
BURNS' POLITICAL VIEWS,
LONDON, January 15,
Scots will be pleased to learn that _it I is libellous to say, as do many biographics, that Robert Burns' political views led to disagreement with the authorities during his employment as an excise officer at Dumfries. Such is the disclosure of Mr. B. R. Leftwieh, Customs House librarian, who adds that tho Department has found records of 1791, stating: "Robert Burns, tho poet, does pretty well. He is aged 32, and has been employed for three years." Burns was recommended for promotion to an examiner, but died before it could be effected. Another find was a Treasury warrant of 1083, authorising the payment from excise revenues, then a royal perquisite, of £250 a fortnight to Nell Gwynn, the actress, and mistress of Charles 11.
