HUGE FLYING BOAT

Economy Forces Cancellation of Order. BRITISH DECISION. (Received 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, January 18. On the grounds of economy the Air Ministry has cancelled the contract for a huge new six-engined flying boat from Vickers, Ltd. Work on the machine has ceased. The flying boat was to have been the largest in the world, and was planned with the ultimate object of replacing Britain's former policy of airships for Empire mail, cargo and passenger services. Her first regular route was to have been a transAtlantic service between Britain and Canada. She was to have had a non-stop flying range of nearly 2500 miles, and would have carried 20 passengers, with full sleeping accommodation and electric kitchens. Her engines, developing 5000 horse-power, would drive her at a maximum speed of 145 m.p.h. The consruction was planned entirely of metal, and would have been almost twice the size of the German flying boat Do. X., which crossed the Atlantic twice last year.
