THE OLYMPIC GAMES.
NEW ZEALAND REPRESENTATION (To tlie Editor.) I see articles in the papers suggesting rather insisting, that a team of New Zealand athletes should be sent to California to com pete at the Olympic Games. Can the -writers be serious? Is this country so sport mad that in such a year as this money will be sou-it for such a purpose? And if the money 0 !, obtained, will a Government which is'fadei perate need of funds overseas allow the team to go ? I will be answered by the usual ar-u nicnts, that New Zealand's name must be ken 1 before the public overseas, that when the Americans see a New Zealand man or woman breasting the tape after running a hundred metres, they will be inspired to rush off and buy New Zealand butter. Ido not believe it I do not believe that New Zealand ever gained a penny piece through sending a team to the Olympic Gaims anywhere. Perhaps, i n t] l6 past, we could afford to give our best athletes trips abroad. "We cannot now; we cannot even afford to send out best scholars abroad to learn. NEVER A CHAJIPIOX,
