WHANGAREI FIRE.
ADEQUACY OF WATER SUPPLY BRIGADE CONGRATULATED. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, this day. At the Borough Council meeting last night the Mayor, Mr. W. Jones, warmly condemned people whom he characterised as scaremongers for circulating reports concerning the inadequacy of the water supply to cope with the serious fire on Thursday evening. These people, he said, were under a misapprehension. The meters showed that the pressure had been maintained to the end, and experienced firemen said that no lead when turned on full could be handled by less than two men. People did not realise when they saw the water trickling out of the hoses that these were not turned on to full capacity. At the same time, the great drain on the reservoirs had justified the council in restricting the use of garden hoses. The Mayor said that at the beginning of the next financial year the council should prepare a scheme for a new water supply sufficient for 10 years ahead. The town was growing rapidly and the future should be provided for. A motion was passed congratulating the fire brigade on its splendid work on the night of the lire and reference was also made to the way in which the borough services had been maintained with as little dislocation as possible.
