SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

On Boxing liiglit a dance was held at Muriwai House. There was a largo attendance, including visitors from Auckland, Kuineu, Rowiti and Waimauku. The dance room was decorated with nikau palms and coloured streamers. The prizes for a Monte Carlo waltz were won by Miss Perkins (Pukekohe) and Mr. Roy McDonald (Rcwiti).

Mr. and Mrs. George James Chapman, of Eden Street, Ellerslie, recently held a family gathering at their residence to celebrate the anniversary of their golden wedding. Mrs. Chapman is the eldest daughter of the late Mr. William C. Stanford, of Kent, England, and Mr. Chapman is the eldest son of the late G. J. Chapman, sen., late of the 58th Regiment.

The Auckland Lawn Tennis championship tournament, which started yesterday at tho Stanley Street courts, attracted a largo number of young players. The lawns were in perfect condition, and tho glimpses of the shining Waitemata and the New Zealand Christmas trees in full bloom gave a delightful effect, and called forth from the visitors expressions -of delight at the ideal surroundings. White frocks, in every summer material, wcro worn, and the multi-coloured hats and parasols made a vivid splash of colour amidst the dazzling sunshine.
