BELGIAN FINANCES.
Denial of Instability of the
Franc.
RETALIATORY PROTECTION,
BRUSSELS, December 25.
The members of the Chamber of Deputies heartily cheered M. Vandervelde, who gave the Socialists' blessing when the Prime Minister, M. Renkin, vehemently dismissed as wickedly false rumours to the effect that the franc was tottering.
M. Renkin said Belgian industries were so threatened by the flood of imports that the Cabinet shortly would announce temporary retaliatory protective decrees.
The Governments of Switzerland and •Spain are following Belgium's lead in the • way of retaliation. Both have adopted the quota system for limiting imports. The Spanish action is mostly against French products, though it also includes frozen meat and eggs.
