LAND AND SEA CONTESTS.

The round of Christmas attractions and entertainments will be continued next week. The Auckland Pacing Club's Ellerslie carnival will be continued next Tuesday, and again on Friday and Saturday of next week.' On Monday the Auckland Trotting Club's summer meeting will open at Alexandra Park. It will be continued on Wednesday and Thursday.

The country week cricket competition began at Eden Park yesterday. Teams from South Auckland, North Auckland, Rodney, Franklin, Bay of Plenty, Pukekobe, Kaipara and Auckland, are competing in games that will be continued, next week.

The Auckland Bowling Centre's annual tournament opens to-day, and will be continued throughout next week. It is hoped, weather permitting, that the finals will be played off on New Year's Day.

On Monday the Auckland provincial lawn tennis championship contests will start at the Stanley Street courts. On New Year's Day the suburban championships and handicap.tourneys will be started. A major New Year's Day attraction is the Plunket Shield cricket match between Auckland and Otago. . The match will last four days. The same day there will be a regatta at Cowes Bay, and sports meetings at Te Aroha and Whatawhata.

During the week excursions will be run to the numerous beaches and beauty spots in the harbour, and in the Waitakere Eanges.

There is a tempting list of evening amusements to choose from. The revival of Gilbert and Sullivan's opera is proving very popular, and excellent talking films are being shown in the various city theatres.
