CHRISTMAS MAIL
» BUSY TIME FOR OFFICIALS. FEWER TELEGRAMS HANDLED. As in past years, the Post Office had a busy time coping with the rush of Christmas business,. but excellent organisation has enabled requirements to be met with a minimum of inconvenience or delay. It is expected that the volume of business, when the figures are known, will equal that of past years. All members of the staff who had.had any experience in the work were mobilised for the mail sorting, and a number of schoolboys were engaged to assist postmen on their deliveries. _ The air mail from Wellington arrived on Thursday afternooon, and was sorted and delivered before nightfull. It was. brought up by Captain J.-Buckndge in a Spartan machine, which ■ landed and delivered mail matter en, route at Palmerston North, Wanganui, Hawera and New Plymouth. * ' On Christmas Eve the telegraph branch dealt with over 50,000 messages, which a decrease of 12,000 on the 1930 figures. Although the staff was augmented from other parts of the servo! and extra messengers were engaged, o P ?rators did not finish until 2 a.m. on Thursday.
