THE NEW DOMAIN ROAD.
The Mayor defends the proposed road into the Domain on the grounds that there "would be little encroachment on the bush, that the Xew Zealand Institute of Horticulture reported favourably, and that the opening up of this portion would lessen the danger from undesirable characters. It is a weak defence. The road will spoil one of the most beautiful secluded spots in Auckland and keep pedestrians away from it. Those who go to the Domain to enjoy such walks run little risk of meeting undesirables. While this element is always with us, it is well known that the Domain is much safer than it used to be. At any rate, the "undesirable" argument could be used to open up, and so destroy, or to close, every piece of woodland park in or near the city. Nor is there any need for this road from a traffic point of view. The Domain is already well roaded. and if any improvement is needed, the first thing to do is to straighten out dangerous, bends in the drive from Stanley Street. To make the Domain more of a thoroughfare would be a grave mistake. It should be largely a place for rest and quiet.
