MOUNT EDEN PRISON.
FUNDS FOR CHRISTMAS CHEER. The Auckland Discharged Prisoners' Aid Society has decided to appeal to the people of Auckland to provide Christmas cheer for the inmates of Mount Eden prison. At a meeting yesterday it was pointed out that unless the society made some efforts, the prisoners would receive ordinary rations only. It was imperative, said the chairman. Archbishop AverilK that the society's financial position should be strengthened in order to allow it to carry out its service to the community. As an example of the work being done by the society, the secretary, the Rev. G. E. Moreton, reported that during the last two months he had paid 33 visits to the prison and had interviewed 140 prisoners. Relief had been given in 246 cases at a cost of £117. A number of letters of appreciation bad been received from prisoners, discharged prisoners and their dependants.
