WHANGAREI. The run of high scores in the Whangarei cricket championship was broken on Saturday. At Maungakaramea, Whangarei made 17 (Child six for 9)> and 82 (Wilson 40), the home side replying with 43 (Wilson five for 6). High School defeated the leaders, scoring 74 (Gaulton 32, Mason six for 18), ana 116 for eight (Miller 38, Gaulton 34). Onerahi 60 (Gaulton seven for 17). Playing at Hikurangi, Combined Services made 74 (Thomas 34, Richard seven for 34), to which Hikurangi replied with 2o (Matthews five for 13). In their second knock Services declared with seven down for 44, leaving the home side an hour to make the necessary runs. They just failed, scoring 75 for five (Hamilton 56 not out). The only game played on concrete resulted in an easy win for Nomads, who made 172 for two, declared (Hewin 76, Collins 63), Portland, replying with 40 (Brainsbv seven for 7), and 70. A trial team to . represent Whangarei against Dargaville on December 19 will be: Chitty (captain), Morgan and Saul (Combined Services), Hewlett and Mason (Onerahi), Hewin and Foote (Nomads), Hamilton and Nesbitt (Hikurangi), Child (Maungakaramea), East (Thursday). Others to practise for representative matches are: Collins, Dunn, Langlands and Saul. THAMES. The Thames Cricket Association held a further round of Cup matches on Saturday, when High School defeated Karaka and Tararu beat City, both three-pointers. In the former game Karaka went to the wickets first, and scored 91 (G. Buchan 38, R. Buchan 12). The most successful bowlers for High School were Head, M. Baker and Pedrotti. High School, in its first innings, scored 86 (W. Baker 24, Hayward 25). The Buchan brothers took most wickets for Karaka. The second innings of the Karakas saw them all out for 44 (Twentyman and Jensen double figures). Requiring 50 to win, High School had scored 62 when the fifth wicket fell. This made High School's fourth successive victory. In the City-Tararu match, the former batted first and scored 79 (Gibson 41 not out, Pratt 15). Morgan took most wickets for Tararu..... In its first innings Tararu totalled 124 (R. Billing 4S, C. Billing 24, Hoyle. 14). Wayne took five wickets for 22. City reached 60 in its second innings (Gibson 21, Pratt ll).Morgan secured most of the wickets. Tararu required only 16 toj win, but lost three wickets before scoring! them. '
