INTEREST IN MARSDEN FIGHT
LABOUR LOOKS TO FUTURE
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
WHANGAREI, this day. A crowd of over 2000 watched the election results as they were posted in front of the "Northern Advocate" building. Mr. Barclay was regarded as a particularly strong opponent for Mr.- Murdoch, but the early returns indicated that the rural vote still remained with the sitting member. Even in ..the town, where the Labour organisation expected great things, the Coalitionist gained an advantage of 550. When the result was announced, shortly after nine o'clock, both candidates briefly addressed' the electors. Mr. Murdoch thanked the people for their continued confidence"" in him and said that if there had been a cleaner contest in the Dominion it must haveibeena record. . ~ Mr. Barclay said he was very pleased to have increased the Labour vote by 1500 and made it plain to his supporters that the fight was just beginning so far as Marsden was concerned.
