MAYOR'S HUGE SALARY.

PROTEST BY COMMUNISTS.

NEW YORK, November 27

Three hundred policemen, kept order while 2000 Communists, led by a band and banners, marched upon! the City Hallj to protest as violently as they could against the Mayor's £8000 a year salary, suggesting that at least half should be diverted for the relief of the unemployed. They did not see Mr. "Jimmy" Walker, who has left for California on a mission, which, apparently, is designed to bring him glory.

Busy though he is as Mayor, Mr. Walker has been retained as special counsel for Tom Mooney, and it is for the purpose of making a plea for the pardon of that labour convict that Mr. Walker is en route to'appear personally before Governor Rolph, at San Francisco.

A dozen times in as many years Mooney has failed" in his appeals to the executive against his life sentence for the "Preparedness Day" bombing in San Francisco in 1916.

If Mr. Walker succeeds before Governor Rolph he will become overnight a popular hero,, and in view of Tammany's present tarnished reputation, the success of the mission is ; extremely important from the Democratic standpoint.
