WILL NOT LEAD.
IF BRUCE RETURNS.
LONDON, November 27.
"I suppose you will be. the next Prime Minister of Australia," said a politician to Mr. S. M. Bruce, at a dinner to the Canadian Prime Minister, Mr. R. B. Bennett, at the Mayfair Hotel.
"There is one thing you can be certain of," replied Mr. Bruce, "and that is I won't."
Mr. Bruce' sat at the top of the table, amid almost the entire British Cabinet. He had a strange neighbour in Sir Herbert Samuel, one of Britain's most rigid free traders, with Mr. Walter Runciman on his other side. It was a remarkable gathering, the leaders in every branch of industry, over 30 peers, the High Commissioners,- Mr. Rudyard Kipling, and many other prominent men being present.
