DELEGATES FROM AUSTRALIA

WELCOMED BY .MAYOR «

Seven delegates from the Commonwealth arrived by the • Maun garni i yesterday to take part in the biennial conference in Auckland, of the council of the Australasian Institute of Secretaries.

The secretary, Mr. E. T. Spackman, said that all the Australian States were represented. The institute had a membership of considerably over 2000, including approximately 200 New Zcalanders. The gold medal awarded annually for the best examination results had been won for two years in succession by New Zealanders.

The delegates include Mr. C. H. Lamb, aide de camp to the Governor-General' of the Commonwealth, Sir Isaac Isaacs, and Mr. W. N. Twiss, secretary tc the South Australian Dried Fruit Board.

Civic Reception. While many and different sports bodies had come to the Dominion both to play and deliberate, this was the first time that a business body from Australia had held conferences in the Dominion, said the Mayor, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, in welcoming the delegates at a civic reception. He hoped that the business which they had come to complete would be successful and that the visitors would leave the Dominion with the happiest of memories. As vice-president of the New Zealand division of the institute, Mr. H. B. Burnett also welcomed the visitors. He spoke in place of the president, who hap. pens also to be Mayor of Auckland. Mr. Burnett hoped that the visit would be productive of good both to the Commonwealth and to the Dominion.

Mr. T. Layton, of Hobart, senior vicepresident of the institute, replied for the delegates. He congratulated Mr. Hutchison on his election to the Mayoralty, saying that it reflected credit not on Mr. Hutchison alone, but on the rest of the institute. Mr. Hutchison then called for three cheers, which were rousingly given by a packed hall.
