The cord and tassel on an umbrella are a link with the days when most men carried a sword. With the sword, the ■fancy-ended loop was turned round the wrist, so that tbe weapon would not be lost if it were twisted in the hand. As the sword passed out of use among civilians, the cord and tassel passed to the canes afterwards carried and then to umbrellas.
