ESSAYS ON MAORI.
NEW BOY SCOUTS' BADGE,
The results of the annual essay competition promoted by the Akarana Maori Association for Maori girls' schools are announced as follows: —
Victoria Maori Girls' School. —Senior: Miss Waitanga Greavee. Junior: Miss Faith Douglas. Hukarere School. —Senior: Miss Manu Mataira! Junior: Miss Queenie Garmondsway. The subjects were history, customs and social matters of the native race. The examiner commented on the consistent high average of merit displayed. As the. result of a favourable recommendation made by the Auckland Boy Scouts to the New Zealand executive, a national badge has been adopted as one of the efficiency qualifications of a Scout. For some time past the Auckland Girl Guides have been examined by an official of the Auckland Maori Association on elementary knowledge of Maori history, tradition, place-names, pronunciation and trees, plant and bird life, a study of which subject ie • calculated to help young Xew Zealanders to know the chief characteristics of their country.
