MOTOR PARTY RESCUED.
BENEATH BURNING CAR. MAORI'S GREAT STRENGTH. The almost superhuman strength of a Maori undoubtedly saved the lives of four men on the Ngatea lioad on Sunday. Mr. C. Lord was driving a practically new car to Tauranga on business. He was accompanied by three friends. Going along, the Paeroa Road, and within 13 miles of Paeroa, the car, on turning at right angles, fell into a 9-foot drain, which was obscured from view.
The car turned a complete somersault, came to a standstill upside down, and caught fire.
Almost at the moment a Maori of huge physique was passing. . He immediately dashed to the spot and lifted the car, although just how he managed to lift it in the face of the increasing flames, is incomprehensible. Mr. F. Langley, of Devonport, was the first to be liberated, and with hie added assistance the other three men were removed. The flames 'by then were raging fiercely, and the car -was quickly destroyed. Beyond damaged clothing and a few scars and abrasions, the party suffered no injury.
