TAKAPUNA RACES.

VOLIMOND LIFTS CUP.

SPRINT TO ROYAL KTTI/ER

PERSHAM HOME IN THE PLATE.

The Takapuna Jockey Club was fortunate in being greeted with fine weather on Saturday for the opening of its spring meeting. The racing was very enjoyable, and some good finishes were recorded. The big event, the Alison Cup, was won handsomely by Mr. P. A. Swney's mare Volimond, which has been showing fairly consistent form. There were few surprises, but Principal nearly landed one in the High-weight when he filled second place to Heremia. It was somewhat surprising that Persham, after his recent good showing, was. allowed to go out fifth favourite in the' Plate. The sprint was disappointing, only five horses .facing the starter. The winner turned up in Royal Ruler, who was having his second outing for the day. Many who believe in the second time up rule were nicely rewarded. The investments for the day were £22,974, compared with £36,516 for the corresponding , day last year, a decrease of £13,542. Favourite Just Beaten. True Blood, Sir Mond and Bronze Tray were the defections from the Alison Cup. Prince "Val was installed a firm favourite with £905, the next choice being Royal Doulton ( £717) and Baroscope (.£585). The investments on Volimond were £426, and she paid a nice price. Prince Val was the quickest to find his feet and led in the early stage from Brampton, Catoma, Baroscope, Volimond and Royal Doulton. As they passed the stand the order was: Prince Val, Catoma, Brampton, Volimond, Baroscope and Royal Doulton. Catoma took charge as they entered the back stretch, being followed by Prince Val, Brampton, Baroscope, Volimond and Royal Doulton. Before the top was reached Keesing got to work on Volimond and she took the lead from Brampton, Catoma, Prince Val, Baroscope and Royal Doulton. Volimond was first into the straight from Prince Val and Brampton, abreast. Baroscope and Gatoma, together, and Royal Doulton. The daughter of lamond and Tivoli stayed on well and got home with a length to spare ( from Prince Val, who beat Baroecope by three-quarters of a lengths Brampton was fourth, followed by Royal Doulton and Catoma.

The Juveniles. There were only two withdrawals from the Cambria Handicap, namely, Timorous and Foreign Money. Tea Trader was made a hot favourite, carrying £1037. The next in order of favouritism were Miss Linley ( £556) and Prolyxo ( £500). Prolyxo was smartest to begin from Tea Trader, Holly Lu and Miss Linley. Going along the back Mies Linley ran to the front and was followed by Prolyxo, Tea Trader, Morehu, Whirlalong, Holly Lu and Muscadine. Going along the top stretch Prolyxo was again in charge from Tea Trader, Miss Linley and Whirlalong. They entered the straight in the same order and Prolyxo lasted long enough to win by a long neck from the favourite with ■Whirlalong two lengths further away. Miss Linley was fourth and then came Holly Lu, Muscadine and Morehu. Decisive Victory. Hit the Deck, Holly Holm, Valueless, Lady Muek, Peter Jackson and Bugle Call declined engagement in the- Takapuna Plate and Biddy's Boy was most sought after with £642 on his chance. Hβ was closelv followed by Speedmint (£618) and Chief Jewel (£599). Pereham carried £373 of the public's .money. Jalldy Earo was the early leader from Chief Jewel, Persham and Biddy's Boy. As the field raced along the back the order was Instalment, Biddy's Boy, Chief Jewel, Persham, Monarchy, United, Jalldy Karo/Te Money and Speedmint. Going across the top: the only alteration was that United and Speedmint improved their-positions. With heads turned for. home Boy hit the front from Persham, United, Chief Jewel and Speedmint. In the run to the judge Persham came through and defeated, the favourite decisively by a length, with Speedmint three-quarters of a length further away. The fourth horse was Chief JRuler and he was followed by Jalldy Karo, United, Lady Vane, Speedfast, Limeen and Instalment. .. ; Confidence Justified. For the Ponui Handicap there were only two scratchings, Holly Holm and Escalus. Taurua, with £963, was a good favourite from Valmarie (£742) and Good Idea (£313). The Whangareiowned and trained Paper Dart was entrusted with £16S. The favourite hopped out smartly-and led along the back from EekarauraU, Valmarie, Illuminagh, Paper Dart and Excella Tea. Rekaraurau displaced Taurua crossing the top, and the latter was followed by Valmarie, Glen Eata, Paper Dart, Illuminagh, Excella Tea and Moonfleet. Turning into the straight, Gray brought Taurua to the

I front, and the Potoa gelding was show- ! ing tie way to Rekaraurau, Paper Dart, { Valinarie and Good Idea. Travelling j down the business end the favourite ij had little ! difficulty in winning from j Paper Dart by three-quarters of a I length. Moorifleet finished well to get j third money a similar distance behind Paper Dart. Valmarie Avas fourth, and ■ then came Rekaraurau, Good Idea, Illuminagh, Excella. Tea-and. Glen Eata. ! The Open. Sprint. •■ Tlie Cheltenham Handicap was, disappointing in that only five runners I went to the post. The field comprised j High Comedy, Tea Chat, Royal-Ruler, ] King Ford "and Golden Wedding, and Tea \ Chat ( £1195) was accorded most sup--1 port. The next in order of bettius was j High Comedy ( £G00). Royal "Ruler carried £258. When the tapes were released King Ford was in charge from Royal Ruler, Tea Chat, High "Comedy and Golden Wedding. As they went . along the back" Tea. Chat ranged alongside King Ford and High Comedy and Royal Ruler were on even terms in next

berth, Golden Wedding being tailed off. The order was the same across the top and into the straight, but once in line for the deciding mark Royal Ruler put in his claim and won nicely by a length from Tea Chat, who beat High Comedy by three parts of a length. King Ford was fourth. Later results: — ALISON CUP of 350sovs One mile, three furlongs and forty yards. 4—VOLIMOND, br m. 6yrs, by Limond—Tivoli (Mr. P. A.
