SOCIAL GATHERINGS. There was a record attendance at the card party held at Devonport on Saturday evening conducted by the Labour League Club. The winners of the euchre tourney were Mrs. Walters, Mr. Lythberg and Mrs. Coghlan. The whist drive resulted in Mrs. Smith securing the honours. }*.** ' 'A ' A, pleasant dance was held in the Navy League Hall, Devonport, on Saturday, . conducted by the North Shore Cricket Club. Wakelin. « * * * A. surprise party of Dargaville and Ruawai young people visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. Sills at Turiwiri. Dancing and games occupied, the evening. Holm and G Mcale « #. * * There was a good attendance at Wednesday's meeting of the Oncwhero branch of the women's division of the Farmers' Union. Mrs. Older presided. Mesdames Older, F. Marshall and H. Dyer were appointed a housekeeper advisory . committee. A demonstration on sick room nursing was given by Mrs. Raby. The hostesses were Mrs,. Marshall and Miss M. Martindale.. ■■*■■■« * * The last. meeting of the Pukekawa branch of • the women's division of. the Farmers' Union was held at the residence of Mrs. J. Logan. The proposal to establish a rest home- for farmers' wives was discussed, and the scheme approved. The next meeting .will be held at Mrs. L. Logan's residence, and will take the form of ' a library afternoon. The hostesses were.Mesdames Mason, Hunter and Geraghty. * * * * The centenary celebration of the founding of the Sistera of Mercy, falls early next month, and the children's fancy dress ball held in the'Orplieuni Theatre, Onehunga, was to raise funds for the event." Over 200 children in fancy dress danced to the music of the Fire Brigade Orchestra. The judges were Mrs. W. J. Jordan, Mrs. F. W. Kerr, Mrs. F. Denize. The following are the winners:—Best fancy costume, girls, Claudia Over, fairy queen, 1; Kathleen Fitzpatrick, Early Victorian, 2; best fancy costume, boys, • Terence Henehan, costermonger, 1; Maurice Zuill, Mickey the- Mouse, 2. The following were awarded prizes:—Stewart Downie, the little baker; Beryl Tabrum, sailor bride; Patricia Webb, white rabbit; Mary Edwards, Irish washerwoman; Mary Coon, butterfly; Clarence Thorpe, little old lady. A special prize for a little lady of the Old World was awarded to Miss Joan Woodward. At the conclusion of the children's session adult dancers enjoyed new and old-time dancing. The grounds of "Aratonga" Convalescent, and Rest Home, Aratonga Avenue, One Tree Hill, were a feast of colour with rambling roees covering quaint nooks, gay beds of sweet peas and beautiful flowers on Saturday afternoon, when Miss Potts entertained a large number of guests at a garden party. The hostees, who. received her guests in a beige spotted chenille frock and tuscan hat, had devised a delightful afternoon's entertainment for the.guests. Madame Baird's pupils gave an artistic display of physical exercises and poetic dances in Grecian costumes. It was held on the lawns. Tennis and other outdoor games were provided for" the-"visitors. Among those taking part were 'Misses Crane, Joyce Adams, Ailsa and Barbara Stephens. Among the visitors were: Canon Faneourt, and Mesdamcs Munroe, Rendell, Bull, Stretton,' Stocker, Warren, Wilson, Crane, N. Kerr, J. To celebrate the coming-of-age of their only daughter, Miss Edna Pearson, Mr. and Mrs' Arthur Pearson gave a dance at the Domain Kiosk on Saturday evening. During the party some amusing' competitions were held, and won by Miss May Gregory, Mies- Black and Messrs. Watts and M. Gregory. The supper tables were arranged with long crystal stands, filled with giant pink and cream roses. All kinds of favours, including quaintly shaped headdresses, were • distributed to the guests. Mrs. Pearson received the guests in a black lace and georgette; Miss Edna. Pearson wore ,a .blush. rose satin, with overdress of chiffon. Among those present were: Mrs.-F. The annual meeting of the Papatoetoe branch of the W.C.T.U. was held in the Methodist Hall, Papatoetoe, on Wednesday. Mrs. F. H. Leonard presided. Mrs. Brocklehurst was elected president, and the other officers were elected as follows: Vice-presidents, Mrs. Leonard, Mrs. 0. M. G. Hugheon, and Mrs. McDonald j secretary, Miss Kimpton; treasurer, Mrs. W. A. Nesbitt. The financial statement disclosed a satisfactory position, and showed that good progress had been made during the year. Afternoon tea was presided over by Mrs. Nesbitt and Mrs. Rcdshaw. Tennis, croquet and clock golf were played, and afternoon tea was served. Miss E. Wheeler was the winner of the tennis tournament, and Mrs. Campbell first for crazy croquet, Mrs. Coupe first for target croquet, Mrs. Tullock first for clock golf, Mrs. Williams being successful in the treasure hunt. The Kcv. W. Gilmotir acted as chairman. The Balmoral Church choir rendered two selections, "Over the Hill at Early Dawu : ' and "An Evening Lullaby," both of which were well received. The other items on 4the'programme were, violin solo, "Liebesfreml," Mr. Alf Oracle; song, "The Lass With the Delicate Air," Miss Meryl Harvey; recitation, "The Wedding Whispers," Miss Rona Speed; solo, "The Stockrider's Song," Mr. Laurie Stuart; humorous selection, Mr. J. Wells; violin quartet, "Minuet and Gavotte," Messrs. F. siielmerdine, G. Firth, I. Taklc and S. Harvey; humorous duet, Mrs. Gillespie- and Mr. F. Taylor; baritone solo, "My Heart's Desire," Mr. H. S. Harvey; soprano solo, "The Valley of Laughter," Miss Bertha Thompson. The Balmoral Male Quartet delighted the gathering with a fine rendering of "Drink To Me Only with Thine Eyes," and the evening concluded with an entertaining humorous sketch by Misses Watson, Zena Andrews and Nancy Maud. Miss Ella Postles and Mrs. 11. S. Harvey were the accompanists. The proceeds of the concert are in aid of a new church notice board at the Balmoral Presbyterian Church.

One of the largest and most successful functions held in the Mangcre district was the garden fete and Paddy's market held in the grounds of the homestead of the late Rt. Hon. W. F. Massey on Saturday afternoon. Mr. P. G. Massey, the present occupier of the homestead, who placed the grounds at the disposal of the committee responsible for the afternoon, has had the house and grounds remodelled, and together with the many flowers and shrubs, they were a constant source of admiration during the afternoon. Dr. Buckley Turkington formally opened the fete, which was attended by about 600 guests from Mangere and the neighbouring districts of the Hauraki electorate. A programme of races and donkey rides for the children, as Avell as a parade of decorated tricycles and perambulators, with clock golf, croquet and tennis for the adults, was successfully carried through before the' heavy rain set in at five o'clock. An exhibition of Highland dancing, to the accompaniment of pipe music by Mr. 1!. McLeod, was also given by spvcral young dancers. The following were the winners in the decorated vehicles competition:— Decorated perambulators, Helen Ellison 1, Doreen White 2, Joan Fountain 3; decorated bicycles, Eileen Cairns- 1; boys' bicycles, Keith Foster 1, W. Double 2, J. Mason -3. The various stalls were in charge of ladies from the followingdistricts: —Gift stall, Otahuhu; sweets, Howick; ices and teas, Mangere; flowers, East Tamaki; cakes, Papatoetoe; sports, Messrs. R. J. An enjoyable dance, tinder the auspices of the Louvain Tennis Club, was held in Balmoral Bowling pavilion recently. The hall was artistically decorated with .iballoons and streamers. Monte Carlo prizes were won by Mrs. Atkinson and Mr. M. Grace. Mr. Archibald added to the pleasure of the evening, by the rendering of two songs. The singing of "Auld Lang Syne" brought to a close the first dance of the recently formed club. * «' * * A successful gift afternoon was held in the residence of Mrs. J. Donald, of Selwyn Road Epsom, on Friday afternoon. After a musical programme and afternoon tea the gifts were exhibited, and on a-vote- , as to the best value for amount expended prizes went to Mrs. De Launayl, Mrs. Whittome 2, and Mrs. Dunlop 3., -Mrs. Donald is handing the gifts to the Rev. George Budd, superintendent of the Home . Missions Committee of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand, to. be "distributed among Presbyterian families in the backblocks' at the coming festive season. The number of gifts received was between 40 and 50. ; . *> * *■ *■ The Amateur Operatic Society Hall in Grafton Rpad was well filled on Saturday evening, when Mrs. Bartley-Baxter presented her students in a very interesting programme. Each item was enthusiastically received by the audience. The first item was a children's play, entitled "The Goofus Man," about a dozen small children acting their parts very cleverly. This was followed by a Shakespearean item by Miss Margaret Waddingham, which was well received. A humorous .recital by Miss JJorcen Finlinson,.and a dramatic recital by Miss Margaret Lee were given an enthusiastic reception, and "Miss Moya Cooper-Smith was much appreciated in violin solos. A Shakespearean scene from "Hamlet" was well done by Messrs Walton, J. Parsons, Hooves, Pilkingtoh, ' Misses Margaret Waddingham, Joan Simpson, and Gwen MaNTaughton. Miss Isabel Henderson gave a clever character sketch, and a song, "Babe o' Mine," was given by Miss Grace Wombwell. In costume, Miss Enid Hosking gave a Shakespearean sketch, Queen Margaret from "Henry VIII." A comedy sketch, entitled "Early Birds," followed, those taking part being Misses Grace Wombwell, Nancy Harrison, Gwen McCrory, Hilda Morse and , Marjorie Taafe. Miss Patricia Boyle gave character portrayals. "That's How. I Mean to Propose,".. and a clever little play on a contrast, in proposals wac ably performed .by Misses Gwen La Trdibe-Hill, Lorraine McElroy, Enid Hosking, Erica Blamh-es, and Messrs. Roy.McElroy. and ■Reeves Pilkington

■ The Holy Trinity Otahuhu, held its annual parish fair in the Parish Hall last Friday and Saturday, the fair being opened by Miss W. Averill on Friday afternoon. On the opening day a 'baby show was held in the adjoining kindergarten hall, while on Saturday a special travel film was shown, the scenes being explained by Mr. K. Impett, and a children's fancy dress parade was held.. A special prize, for the best arranged and decorated stall was given, and. was awarded by Miss Averill to the vestry stall. The prizes in the baby show were won as follows:—Girls, under six months, Jean McPherson; six to 12 months,'.Lois Carter; 12-to IS months, Valerie Masters; 18 months to two years, , Decima Cooper. Boys, under six months, Douglas Pye; six to 12 months,- Kenneth Lay ton; 12 to IS months, John Dunn; IS months to two years,; Basil Hooper.. The winners of the fancy-dress parade •were:—Best decorated perambulator and tricycle, S. and B. Towers; fancy dress, W. Xodell, J. Campbell and K. Peckhain. During .both days many competitions were held, the successful competitors being:— Christ-' rnas ham, Mrs.. Lydford';: baby's outfit, Mr. F. Davis; lamb, Mrs. Taylor; cake, Mrs. F.
