VICTORIA LEAGUE.
Mrs. J. B. Macfarlane, chairman of the ever ready committee of the Victoria League, and Mrs. L. S. Rickerby, secretary of the Ever Ready committee, were the guests or honour at an afternoon tea given by the Ever Ready committee and sewing committee, in the league rooms yesterday. There was a large attendance of members, and Mrs. Macfarlane and Mrs. Rickerby were given an enthusiastic reception. On behalf of the members, Miss Mowbray, president of the league, presented Mrs. Macfarlane with a Dresden china ornament and a novel little bouquet of cottons, silks, needles, tape, elastic and other sewing materials, and Mrs. Rickerby with a beautiful supper cloth, appliqued at each corner, and table napkins. The work of both ladies was spoken of by Miss Mowbray, who paid high tribute to their efforts in connection with the ever ready committee. During the afternoon musical items were enjoyed. Maori songs, one of which having the words and music written by herself, were sung by Mrs. Harold King. A novel accompaniment was the twirling of the fascinating Maori poi. 'Cello solos, given by Mr. Vernon, were much appreciated. Mrs.» Mary Brett Neil was the accompanist. The rooms were delightfully arranged for the occasion with vases containing palest pink begonia and bowls of brown and yellow pansies. Special guests for the afternoon were Mrs. Hill, Mrs. C. H. Burgess (New Plymouth), Mrs. Pring, Miss Fenton, and Misses Slator, and members of the executive. The hostesses were: Mesdames Skeates, Alfrcy, Gulliver, Stretton, Cruickshank, Charlton, Moorliouse, Angwin, and Misses Teape and Keesing.
