SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The Mothers* dub, Y.W.CA, was well attended last Tuesday, when Mrs. Maim presided. During the afternoon, a play 'reading was given by Mrs. Forrest and 'Mrs. Saunders, which was much enjoyed. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses.

The Women's Progress Club held a meeting on Thursday afternoon at the Higher Thought Temple, Wellington Street. Being the annual general meeting, officers and executive committee were elected for the ensuing year, and by a majority vote, the day was altered to Wednesday for the next year's activities, A violin solo, "Berceuse" (Godard), was rendered by-Miss Oberg, and afternoon tea was dispensed

The ladies' committee of the Taroaki Yacht Club's boathouse fund committee held a danee in the Selwyn Road Hall last Tuesday evening. A large number of visitors from the city were present, in addition to the local residents." Several items were rendered by Miss Elva Wrigley, Miss Joyce Wright and Mr. Jack Bree. Miss Bergan was accompanist. Prizes were awarded for a Monte Carlo, Mr. and Mrs. Hirst being the winners. Mr. Bree and Mrs. Bradbury won the waltzing competition.

The annual meeting of the Epsom Women's Christian Temperance Union was held on Thursday afternoon in the Methodist Hall. Mrs, Benfield, president, occupied the chair. Full reports of all departments of work were given, and satisfaction felt at what had been accomplished during the year. This was followed by an amusing monologue—and sketch. Mrs. Carte Llpyd was accorded a hearty vote of thanks by a]l present. Tea was served by Mesdames Oxenham, Creep* Earland and a number of helpers, and at the invitation of Mrs. O'Halloran, of the Holiday House committee, members afterward? inspected the house and grounds where a new tenim court isnearing completion and a recently acquired cow is a much prized possession.

The annual break-up of Mrs, Anne C.! Speight's pupils was held at St. Andrew's Hall, Epsom, last evening, when there was a large attendance of parents and friends. Items were given by the physical culture classes in Swedish drill, Indian clubs, marching and dumbbells. The Junior and senior dancing classes contributed several ballets, and solos were given by Misses Olive Surman, Edie Eayrs, Heni Calkim, Rui Calldm, Cuehla Eolkard, Hazel Burrell and Lurline and Gladys McPherson. Items were also contributed by Mrs. Osborne, Mrs. Rosie Stratton, Miss Watson, Miss E. Cork, Miss F. Laing, Miss :J. The Women's National Reserve held the last meeting of the year at the residence of Mrs. H. R. Hesketh, in Gillies Avenue;, when Mrs. John Cook, acting-president, welcomed the Mayoress, Mrs. Hutchison, on her visit to the society. In order to make the Mayoress conversant with the activities of the society, Miss Olga Paykel, the honorary secretary, gave a short resume of its work in Auckland from its inception in 1915 to the present time. A motion of sympathy with Mies E. L. Donald, one of the members, on the £eath of her mother, was passed. News was received that Mrs. F. Fitchett, the president, who has been abroad for some time, will probably be back in Auckland about the end of February, After business of general importance was dealt with, afternoon tea brought the meeting to a close.

A large' and successful bridge afternoon waa held in the Tudor Reception Hall yesterday in order to raise money for certain renovations at the Karitane Home. The party was most enjoyable and an undoubted success, the organisers being Mesdames J, H. Frater, H. P. Richmond and Hugh Kirker, As a result of the effort, sufficient money was obtained to effect the renovations which, owing to the various demands on the home, ~ were urgently required. The hostesses at each table were;- —Lady Sinclair-Lockhart, of the Auckland, branch of the Plunket Society, Mesdames Holdsworth, H. C. Davies, R. S. Whitley, Nelson Levien, Marsack, E. V. Sutherland, V. Frater, John Alexander, Lusk, Roche, W. M. Jacks, Martin, Hayman, J. McF. Knox, Plummer, Corbett, Cowell, D. Clerk, V. Choyce, G. Patterson, A. Henderson, Derrick, A. Eccles, H. Bayly, Chalmers, G. O'Leary, A. Campbell, M. Eccles, Lintott, J. A. Moir, Misses Murray, Shroff, Lusk.

An energetic committee of ladies under the leadership of Mrs, E. Sowman, pres> dent, and Mrs. L. Powell, secretary, was responsible for the organisation of a successful bazaar, heid in the Taupirl Hall on Thursday afternoon and evening. The-takings amounted to £48 odd, The ■ stallholders were:—Sewing stall, Mesdames W. Moore, G. Powell afid E, Sowman; sweets, Mesdames Price and Jerome; produce, Mesdames D. McKercher and T. McDowell; hoop-la, Mesdames L. Powell and W. Waring; afternoon tea, Mesdames F. Wilson, Richmond, Shepherd and Troup; . surprise packets, Mesdames F. Durbridge and A, Vollemaire. The competitions attracted large entries, the following prizes being won:—A fruit bowl, Mrs. R. T. Hill; pair of candlesticks, Mr. A. Button; large box of chocolates, Mrs. W. Lovell; doll, Mrs. A. W- Buss; large iced cake, Mrs. W,. Waving; cushion, Mrs. A, Murphy; nightdress, Mrs. E, Burinan; packet of lollies, Mrs. Geddes.

The Maiiuvewa branch of the' League, of Motliers held their filial meeting for the year last Thursday, when there was a large attendance, presided over by Mrs. C. S. McCallum. Visitors were present from Clevedon, Weymouth, Takauini and Alfriston. Christmas greetings from the provincial secretary to the branch were read and members received a syllabus for next year's meetings. A programme of musical and elocutionary "items was given, and songs by Miss Gallaher, Mrs. Sexton and Mr. Watt, a violin solo by Mr. Walker and an amusing sketch by Miss Gilbertson. Miss Walker, Miss Craig and Miss Mplnnes acted as aecompanists. - Two competition*?, "Introductions" and "Our Names" afforded a good deal of amusement, the prizes being wop by Lady Gunson, INlrs. Mrg, Keith Ransom Kehler, MA, writer and lecturer, addressed the league of Penwomen on Thursday afternoon, her subject being "Making the Most of Ourselves." She discussed the different complexes which hinder the development of character and summed up the quest of happiness (never achieved by direct search) aa unselfishness. She dealt with the theories of Dr. Watson, exponent of "Behaviourism," Jung and Freud} and recommended for study the works of Professors Overstreet and Adler. On Friday afternoon Miss Alice I#w, LJR.AM., delighted members of the league with an illustrated address on Chopin, Alter . a brief biographical sketch, Miss Law played a number of selections, prefacing each with a few explanatory words. Th© programme consisted of; Fantasia Impromptu, Pre™ ludes in C Minor and A Major, Waltz in C Sharp, Nocturne in G Minor, Mazurka in B Minor, Berceuse, Polonaise and Minute Mrg. Victor Macky presided on each occasion, and presented a bouquet to each speaker, tea closing two enjoyable afternoons.

A successful flannel dance was given in the "Pirate Shippe" Cabaret at Milford on Friday evening by the Milford company of the Girl Guides, with Miss May Christensen (captain) as organiser, assisted by the ladies' committee, Mesdames Christensen, Young, David, Davidson, Scales, Goodwin, Sandes, Kemp and Batty. The supper tables were prettily arranged with pmk "Sweet William" and ferns, and excellent music was provided. Amongst the dancers were:—The Misses P. Johnson, Kell, M. Webster, E. Mills, M. Dale, N. Bodle, M. Forest, Louie Ogrlvie, S.
