RIGHTS OF NATIVES.
WESTERN MAORI ASPIRANT. "I HAVE A POLICY OF MY OWN." (From Our Own Correspondent.) TE KUITI, Friday. Mr. Pepene 33. Ketoni, Independent candidate for the Western Maori electorate, -addressed a meeting of electors at Te Kuiti to-day. In the course of a thoughtful speech the candidate urged the perpetuation of the rights, prestige and mana of the Maori people as conceded by Queen Victoria in the Treaty of Waitangi; ' "If returned to Parliament," said the speaker, "I shall demand remedial legislation to regain the rights and privileges enjoyed by 'the native race in the year 1834 —as signalled by the flag or National Standard presented by William IV. to the Maori people." When asked which party he would support the candidate replied: ' "The Coalition Government has no policy to support, i have a policy of my own and I will support those who support me." :.r . \- 1 .
After the meeting -Pepene- said:. "I have 160 polling places to reach before next Monday, including Great Barrier and the Chatham islands and I have neither motor car nor aeroplane."
