NOMINATION OPPOSED.

Mil. HOLDSWORTHTS POSITION

OBJECTION NOT UPHELD.

Formal objection to the inclusion of the name of Mr. W. J. Holdsworth, Independent candidate for Roskill, on the ballot papers for Roskill was lodged with the returning officer, Mr. J. F. Barrett, yesterday.

■ The ground of the objection was that, as on the day of nomination Mr. Holds - worth was a member of the Local Government Loans Board, he was a public servant drawing salary from the Government and that under the Electoral Act public servants are not eligible to become members of Parliament.

The returning officer consulted £he chief electoral officer in Wellington, and subsequently advised the objector that he had no authority under the Electoral Act to take action and that Mr. Holdsworth's name must appear on the ballot' paper. Mr.' Barrett declined to state the name of the objector.

Mr. Holdsworth, who on Thursday, had tendered his resignation as a member for the Loans referred. at his meeting last night to the lodging of the objection against his candidature.

"They have not been able to find fault with, my platform and my character and now they have endeavoured to use the position for which I was selected by both parties in the House of Representatives to fill owing to my long experience in local body work," he said. "They have lodged a protest against my candidature thinking I would be prevented from, going to the poll. The matter was submitted to the returning officer and also the chief electoral officer in Wellington. My name will go on the ballot' paper. They are not interfering. Objectors may go to the Electoral Court after the poll. Therefore my candidature stands arid no matter what my opponents say or do I am'determined to go to the poll. I will not disappoint the -electors of Roskill, and on Wednesday I am certain they will show their appreciation of such tactics."
