NORTH SHORE BUS FARES.
DEMAND FOR REDUCTION
EXAMINATION OF BOOKS.
At a meeting of the No. 2 Licensing Authority yesterday afternoon in the Chamber of Commerce, Mr. G. O'Halloran presiding, considerable discussion arose on the matter of whether the North Shore Transport Co., Ltd., should be requested to lower the faxes for its trips between Devonport and Milford and Bayswater and Milford. Mr. J. Guiniven contended that the fares were too high in comparison with those charged by other bus companies, and that the high rate of fares tended to lessen the number of passengers and retard the growth of Takapuna and surrounding districts. He said that, though the service was a good one, from the point of view of price of fares it was inferior to the trams, which should not have been replaced. " Counsel for the' company said that they were attempting to cut down expenses as much as they could with the object of reducing the fares, and were experimenting with a new machinc at present. The company had a very large fleet of-buses, and since it was their object to have them all filled they would do what they cquld to meet the request. A motion of the chairman was adopted, which was to the effect that accountants be appointed to examine the books of the Transport Company with a view to ascertaining whether or not the company could reasonably standi the reduction of fares as desired.
