NEW DOMAIN ROAD.

CITY COUNCIL SCHEME.

WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED

"VANDALISM OF TREE-CUTTING."

A recommendation that the proposed light traffic road, Stanley Street to Domain Drive, be undertaken as an unemployment work under No. 5 scheme was adopted by the Auckland City Council at tlieir meeting last evening. It was further decided to ask the Government to give an undertaking that the men employed would not be withdrawn until the work was completed. The Town Planning Committee, in their report, presented a letter from Mr. N. It. W. Thomas, secretary of the Auckland District Council, New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, in which it was stated that it would be necessary to destroy a few karaka trees. But a slight expenditure of money would enable several trees to be moved out of harm's way. The road would have the effect of eradicating a considerable amount of rubbish, and of improving the facilities for access to the Domain, and should be a considerable increase to the amenities of it. A meeting of the council had decided to express approval of the scheme, as outlined by the city engineer, and considered that no material damage would be done by the construction of the road. ' ✓ I "I emphatically protest against the vandalism of cutting down trees in thej Domain to make a road that is abso- j lutely useless," said Mr. J. B. Paterson. "It is just an attempt to commercialise the Domain and create a road to get through to Newmarket." Mr. Entrican: There is a good deal; in what. Mr. Paterson says. If the idea' is to have an outlet for the cast —and that is necessary to relieve traffic congestion at Grafton Bridge and Upper Symonds Street —wc should be very careful before we make up our minds. If the road is to be a permanent outlet instead of a light road, as had been suggested, then it would not be so bad. This outlet will riot fill the need, and we should seriously consider before we interfere with our Domain. Mr. Taylor thought the scheme would have many advantages—it would do away with the Symonds Street and Bridge congestion. If the scheme could be carried out without any great expense, he thought it should be gone ahead with.
