At the "live art" entertainment in aid of the hospital funds ■ given at His Majesty's Theatre,, the ; soprano solas were taken by Miss Hill, in place of Madam. Cora Melvin, who was indisposed, and Miss Molly Woollcott was the premier dancer in the ballet. #.* * . * A surprise birthday party was taken to the residence of Mrs. Arthur Hellaby, of Lucerne Road, Remuera, this week. The rooms were beautiful with blue and gold-flowers. Mrs. Hellaby wore a frock pf floral ninon. Mah jong was enjoyed. Among those present were: Mesdames Rout, H. B. Peacock, E. Elison, Nelson Mitchell, Frank Abbott, R. H. Burrett, Hollingrake, H. McCoy, D. Scott, C. Abbott, L. Alderton, F. Pope, Misses Molly Bailey and Rita Cornajra.

A home meeting in connection with the Oneliunga W.C.T.U. was held at the residence of Mrs. J. Craig oil November 25. The programme was given by the Orpheus 'Musical Club, under the direction of Mrs. John Craig. . Songs were rendered by Mrs. Spenee, Mrs. Petchell, Mrs. Craig and Mr. J. Stacey, recitation by Miss P. Wells, pianoforte solos by Miss Bilkey, and five part songs by the choir. Mrs. Craig outlined the objects of the W.C.T.U. movement, and Mrs. Ashby occupied the chair. Eight new members were initiated, and four names added to the cradle roll.

A meeting of the Western Area Ratepayers and Takapuna Council of Women met yesterday. The president, Mrs. J. C. Blomfield, presided over a well attended meeting. It was decided to hold a Christmas tree shortly to funds to assist the Borough Council with carrying out the improvements to the bathing sheds on the Takapuna Beach. A letter was also authorised to be sent to the No. 2 Licensing authority's meeting asking them to consider earnestly the matter of giving yearly and half-yearly concession tickets for the residents of Takapuna and' Milford, and altfo a reduction of the first section fare. '

An Evening with the three B's —Bacli, Beethoven, Brahms — arranged by Madame Annie Morris, for the music section of the League of Penwomen, on Tuesday evening, proved a rich musical treat.' Madame Morris,, beside giving a short biographical sketch. of each composer, played selections from Bach and Brahms. She was assisted by Mrs. Kingsley in two recitations, "A Manx Sailor's Idea of a Bach Fugue" and a fine description of a Beethoven, symphony; Miss Amy Stevenson, viola solo, "Sonata in G Major"; Miss Mavis Bewson, Prelude and_ Fugue, No. 12; Miss Renee Satchweli, Beethoven Sonata; Miss L. Vickery, Fantasie; Mrs. Bloy, Rhapsodic, Op. 79; Mrs. Hesketh, violin > solo, "Hungarian Dance," No. 5; Miss Ida Walker, two songs. Miss Gertrude Bertram presided, and supper, closed the evening.

A bridge party was. held yesterday afternoon by the newly-formed Bridge Club, at their rooms in His Majesty's Arcade.' The card rooms and hall were arranged in bowls of roses and lilies, and the tea tables were bright with crystal vases of sweet peas. Hostesses for the afternoon were :-r-Ml - s. Cardale, who wore a black crepe do chine, ensemble, black Bangkok hat; and Mrs. Spear, in a black and white costume. Among those present were:—Mesdames Robb, Williams, Hunt, Mair, Scholium, McAneny, Rosser, D. White, A. Farmer, St. Clair Chaney, K. Black, L. Cooper, Milsorn, Bagby, Badger, Odd, S. Jearons, Fallwell, McNariiara, Burton, Butcher, C. Russell. Neuniegen, Meltzer, Dowding, Harris, Leverson, Shaw, McDonald, Brockbar.k, Welch, Crouch,. Gavey, Jowett, Clements, Russell, Brown, Misses K. Bell, Hvnes, Findlav, Warner,. Mitchell, Billing, Heycock, Rowe, Muraine.

The ladies' auxiliary of the St. Andrew's Society held an "At Home" on Tuesday afternoon, when a gathering of mejflbers and friends < heard an interesting address by-Dr. Elaine Gurr. on "The Pre-school Child and Sunlight Treatment." The speaker outlined the attention required by the child at*its most susceptible age, its tendencies and development of hereditary traits. A description of the uses of sunlight treatment, and the methods employed was then given. A programme of songs and a duologue was rendered by Mrs. Black, Mrs. Massieks, Mrs. B. Budge and Mrs. J. Howie. Bouquets of flowers were presented by a tiriy tot, Betty Black, to Dr. Gurr and to Miss L. Braithwaite, the honorary accompanist, who has helped the auxiliary with musical programmes since its inception. Mrs. John Howie was the recipient of a gift from the committee in recognition of her services as secretary. Mrs. W. Black was hostess.
