OUR CIVIL SERVICE.

Stressing the neecl for national economy, Dr. W. H. Horton, United Coalition candidate for Auckland East, said any step in the direction of increasing tho personnel of the Public Service should he deprecated. "Don't imagine," ho said, "that I am attempting to decry our Public Service. As a matter of fact, I Ijave the highest admiration for its members, .for I know many men and women who do most honest and valuable work in many branches of public administration, and this ■ work, too, is highly skilled and highly specialised. My. only criticism is that possibly there fire too many of them." (Loud laughter.)
