ELECTORAL QUALIFICATIONS.
DEFINITION OF PUBLIC SERVANT.
MR. HQLDSWORTH'S DECISION
The Electoral Act expressly debars public servants from being elected to Parliament. Doubt arose as to whether Mr. W. J. Holdsworth, Independent candidate for Roskill, came within the scope of the relevant section by reason of his membership of the Local Government Loans Board, and to avoid any possibility of misunderstanding Mr. Holdsworth to-day tendered his resignation from that office. The resignation, which is addressed to the Prime Minister, is couched in the following terms:: — "Kindly accept my resignation forthwith as member of the Local Government Loans Board. Owing to my being a candidate at the forthcoming Parliamentary elections this is essential. "In resigning from this board I do 60 with regret. The work has been both interesting and congenial, and I would j like to thank you for the confidence j expressed by mv reappointment in March; last."
