LONG CONNECTION WITH RACING

The death occurred suddenly last evenin"- at his residence, Crescent Road, Epsom, of Mr. Angus Gordon-, who tor many. years past was a stipendiary steward to the New Zealand Racing Conference, a position he held till about two months ago when he resigned. Mr. Gordon, who was 67 years of age, was born at Aldcrshot Camp, where his •father, Major Gordon, was an olhcer in the Imperial Army. He was very young when he came to Auckland with bis parents, and at the age of 14, after completing his education at the Auckland Grammar School, entered the Public Works Department. In 1881 he went to England, and later to Cape Colony, where he joined the staff of the Standard Bank of South Africa at King William s Town. He remained there for two years and a half, and then proceeded to Queensland, spending two years on cattle stations. Mr. Gordon returned to New Zealand m 1887 and rejoined the Public VV orks Department, and was later transferred to the Native Land Court Department, actin" as clerk to the Native Land Court and the Magistrate's Court on the East Coast, with Gisborne as his headquarters. He resigned from the Government andl was town clerk at Onehunga from 1802 to 1894, also clerk to the Licensing BenchHe subsequently re-entered the government service and finally resigned_to become secretary of the Auckland Club, position he held till 1912, when he was appointed a stipendiary steward. M hile in charge of the club he was elected Maj oi of Onehunga for the year 1905-6. Mr. Gordon had a long connection with racing He rode his first race on a mare called" Deception at Ellerslie in the autumn of 1879. He managed the stables ot Alajoi George during the latter s frequent lips to England and elsewhere. Air. Gordon resumed the secretaryship of the Auckland Club immediately after his retirement from- the position ot stipendiary steward, and lie was holding that position at the time of his death.
