LOCAL BODIES.

OTAHUHU BOROUGH. The Otahuhu Borough Council met on Thursday, the Mayor, Mr. H. T. Clements, presiding. Spent Oxide.—Mr. F. W. Grey raised the question of properties being endangered by fire as the result of spent oxide being spread on footpaths. He said the material was useful as a weed killer, but it was inflammable, and recently a whole stretch of footpath had been set alight. It was agreed to cease spreading Oxide on footpaths during the dry weather.

Drainage Scheme. —The Tamaki Progressive League submitted a resolution recommending that the council carry _ out a drainage scheme in the area fronting the Tamaki River. The letter stated that the difficulty of disposing of soakage and effluent constituted a menace to health. It was decided, on the motion of Mr. F. W. Grey, to prepare a report on the scheme, based on relief labour under No. 5 scheme. » Railway Concessions. —Following consideration of a from the general manager of -railways, it was decided to ■reply that the provision of a shelter shed for cycles at the Station would encourage workers to travel by train. It was also decided to urge tnat workers' tickets be extended to travellers up to 9 a.m. Roadside Hay.—The borough foreman was instructed to cut grass on roadsides and to supply the hay to residents free of cost. - Insanitary Souse.- —The council resolved to apply for a closing order in respect of a house owned by the Otahuhu Social Service Association on account of its insanitary condition. Rates.—The town clerk reported that the rates received up to October 31 amounted to £846, representing 4.66 per cent of the total rates due. Telephones.—Messrs. F. W. Grey and J. Trenwith were instructed to consult with the district engineer of the Post and Telegraph Department regarding the possibility of having the automatic telephone system installed in Otahuhu. Several councillors said it would scarcely be fair to impose this system with the consequent additional rental on subscribers without consulting them.
