TOWARDS AGREEMENT.

It is good news that the Xew Zealand and Canadian Ministers of Customs are to meet at Honolulu next month to discuss a trade agreement. The tariff Avar between the two countries has lasted far too long. Both parties have suffered, and each has blamed the other. It has long been apparent that there was not much to be hoped- for in negotiation by cable or letter, and that a meeting between responsible envoys was needed. Mr. Downie Stewart should make an admirable negotiator, for he has patience and tact as well as full knowledge of his subject, and both he and Mr. Stevens may have their task made easier by the fact that the meeting is on neutral territory. Public opinion in this country will be unanimous in wishing them every success.
