BANANAS IN DEMAND. STRAWBERRIES PLENTIFUL. NEW POTATOES CHEAPER. The quantity of strawberries offering has doubled during the week, but the demand lias been very {rood and at yesterday's sale prices showed a slight rising tendency. Hothouse tomatoes are also coming in in large quantities and are realising fair prices. Bananas were in keen demand at this morning's sale and large quantities were disposed of at advanced rates. A large shipment from Fiji is expected on Tuesday by the Tofua, which is also bringing pines and water melons from the same source. Local Delicious apples are now almost finished and samples in really good condition are realising high values. The demand for good quality Valencia oranges is also good, and they are selling at increased rates. Latest quotations are:— Strawberries: Marguerites, lid to 1/3 per chip; Captain Cook, 10d to 1/8; Helenslea Surprise, lid to 1/2. Tomatoes: Hothouse, No. 1, firm. 9d to 1/ per lb; ripe, 9d to others, 4d to Bd. Gooseberries: 4/ to 5/6 per case. Cherries: Greytown, 8/ to 12/6. Pears: Nelis. 6/ to 10/; P. Barrys, 5/ to 8/. Apples: Sturniers, 7/6 to 11/; Delicious, 6/ to 12/; Granny Smith, 6/ to 9/; Canadian, 18/ to 19/. Lemons: 5/ to 9/. Poorman oranges: 3/ to 5/. Oranges: Australian Valencias, 8/ to 11/: double cases, 18/ to 22/. Bananas: Xo. 1. repacks, 18/ to 22/6; medium and No. 2, 10/ to 14/. Mangoes: 16/ to 19/. Passions: Australian, 25/ to 26/. Vegetables. Practically no change in the prices of vegetables has been noted during the week, though new potatoes were lower this morning following on heavy supplies. The crop of green peas is ripening rapidly under favourable weather conditions and heavy supplies have come on the market. In proportion to the demand, the market is also heavily supplied with cabbage and cauliflower. Latest quotations are:— Potatoes, Southern, 2/6 to 3/ per sack; new, 4/ to 5/6 per bag; onions, Californian, 18/ to 18/6 per crate; kumaras, Island, 6/ per cwt; cabbage, 1/ to 2/6 per sack; cauliflower. 1/ to 3/; swedes,. 1/ per bag; pumpkins, 18/ to 27/ per cwt; green peas, 2/ to 4/6 per bag; beans, hothouse, 8d to 1/ per lb; broad beans, 1/6 to 2/ per bag; cucumbers, hothouse, 4/ to 7/ per dozen; outdoor, 3/ to 8/; vegetable marrows. 2/6 to e'6; cabbage, loose, 1/ to 1/6; cauliflower, loose, 1/ to 1/6; rhubarb, 1/6 to 5/6; spinach, 6d to 1/; pumpkins, loose, 2/ to 4/ each; radish, 6d per dozen; spring onions, 3d to 8d per bundle; carrots, parsnips, beet and turnips, 8d to 1/8 per dozen; asparagus, 4d to 8d per bundle; leeks, Id to 2d; lettuce, 2/ to 6/ per case. Eggs and Butter. Eggs and also farmers 1 butter remaiu steady at late rates. Hen and Duck Eggs.—Special, 1/1% per dozen; A grade, 1/0%; B grade, ll%d. Farmers' Butter.—Bd to 10d per lb. Poultry. At to-day's auctions the supply of poultry was medium and the demand was poor. The prices paid for some lines show a sharp fall.
