BIBLE AS LITERATURE.
MAY BE USED IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS. " SUPERSTITION EXPLODED." (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day.
According to Mr. A. J. Stallworthy (United, Eden), the Bible may be used in primary schools. Speaking in the House of Representatives to-day, the ■member said that after fifty years' superstition it was held to be against the law or the Education Department's regulation to use the glorious literature of holy writ in the schools, but an official statement at his request was made to the Education Committee, which heard evidence on the Religious Instructions in Schools Bill by Mr. Lambourne, chief inspector of primary schools, to the effect that no regulation or direction of the Department or by-law of an Education Board placed a ban on extracts from the Bible being used as literature in schools.
Mr. Stallworthy said every member of the committee, and most of the witnesses, favoured the Bible as literature for use in primary schools. It was gratifying to him that the superstition had now been exploded and that the most majestic and living thing in literature could be used in our schools.
