READY RESPONSE.
S.P.C.A. STREET APPEAL
SOCIETY" VERY GRATIFIED,
Officials of the Auckland Society; for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals are very grateful for the public response to their first street appeal, held iu the city yesterday. Over £210 was collected, and they wish to thank' the public for the very sympathetic manner in which the appeal was met.
A novel method of collecting was that of four dogs, carrying collection boxes on their backs, who patrolled Queen Street and Karangahape Road. They proved very popular, and succeeded where perhaps the other collectors would have failed. The two which operated in Queen Street, Mrs. H. Shorland's Pootie and Mrs. H. J. D. Lambert's Duke, each collected £6 12/. Miss J. Henderson's Colonel, which patrolled Karangahape Road, obtained over £3 for the society.
Probably the most talented of the dog-collectors was one lent to the society by an anonymous owner. It wore spectacles, carried a pipe in its mouth, and acted its part so well that it attracted the attention of crowds of people round the stall it represented, this providing opportunities ■to the collectors.
