POLICE CHARGES ON 40,000.

CROWD'S WILD STAMPEDE.

M.P. AMONG THE ARRESTS,

Mounted police and foot police with drawn batons charged repatedly through a crowd of 40,000 in Glasgow last night, Stated the "Daily Herald" on October 2.

Nine people were injured, including two police sergeants.

Among thirteen people arrested was Mr. John McGovern, M.P.,* who was refused bail.

At midnight there was a further outbreak in the Garngad arc a, and one arrest was made.

The police, at whom jam jars, bottles and other missiles were thrown, sent for reinforcements and made repeated baton charges.

During the melee many shop ylndows were broken, and a number of articles were stolen.

Early to-day the police were searching for some of the Communist leaders who escaped at the earlier disturbances which occurred in Jail .Square and Glasgow Green. Tlie police made a charge through the entrance to Glasgow Green, carrying the crowd before tlieni. There was a wild stampede. Men and women shouted and screamed. Wooden palings were torn up and pieces thrown. The police drew batons and scattered the crowd, circling through the Green several times. Foot police grappled with the crowd, capturing wooden staves, golf clubs, bottles, walking sticks and other weapons.

Lamp posts were broken and splinters fell on the heads of police and the crowd.

Windows were smashed in Stoekwell Street and looting was reported to the police. In Glasgow Green Mr. McGovern and eleven others were arrested. Mr. McGovern was led away by four policemen struggling violently and followed by an angry crowd, which was dispersed by police with batons drawn. Mr. McGovern was charged with disorderly behaviour.
