STABLE AND TRACK NOTES.

GOT AWAY BADLY. Tradesman got away very badly in the Manaia Handicap at Whangarei on Thursday, and though he was within striking' distance at the turn he failed to go on.. He is a bit wayward in lining up, but with an even jump out it takes a speedy one to head him off. RAN A GOOD RACE. Vandyke ran a good race in the Manaia Handicap at Whangarei on Thursday. He jumped away smartly, and, though Karangapai ran up to him crossing the top, he held on throughout, and Karangapai just got the verdict by half a head. Tiiis should do Vandyke a lot of good, and in his next few efforts he should take a lot of beating over even longer than sprint distances. HAS SOME PACE. Lapstreet has only had three races, and but for her inexperience at the barrier she would have been in the money before now. She dwells at the start and loses a lot of ground, but quickly runs up into a handy position. She did this at Cambridge and also at Whangarei, but the initial efforts left her without a finishing run. The daughter of Lapidary should pay her way on the country circuit this season. BROTHER TO PHAR LAP.

Nightguard, the three-year-old brother to Phar Lap, claims an engagement in the New Zealand Derby next Monday, in which event he is to be ridden by R. Reed. He is owned by Mr. A. Loui'sson, of Christchurch, but his form so far has been very moderate, for he has not ,yet .. lost. . his maiden certificate. As . a yearling Nightguard cost Mr. Louisson loOOgs, and up to the present time the venture has proved a costly one.

TOO MUCH WEIGHT. Full Measure made the running for the greater part of the way in. the Hikurangi Handicap at Whangarei 011 Thursday, and as he turned for home he looked to have the race in safe keeping. However, the straight was just a bit too- long for him with 9.0 and Holly Holm got him about fifty yards from the post and beat' him home. He wa;B forced to make the pace; otherwise he would have been a great deal . harder to beat. C . , > . WON WELL. f Whakapara won the Hore Hore Handicap, six furlongs,.; at the Dargaville meeting at Avondale and lie looked to have,.a. good chance in the Kensington Handicap at Whangarei. He was right in behind the leaders at the turn, and as they swung-out 1 shot through on the inside, to win com- ! fortably. This colt has shown a lot- of speed in his races, and as he ig by Kilbroney should stay on." He scored most-im-pressively on Thursday. • ' STAYED ON WELL. Yolimond was triad' 1 over a mile and-a' quarter in. the _Whangarei Gup on/Thursday. She trailed the field until, hearing the straight, and then commenced a great run, which just landed her a winner from Taneriri. .Volimond has' recently been showing she was returning to form, but it was just a question as to whether she could stay out the extra couple of furlongs. However, E. Keesing, her rider,, nursed her airthe way, and she finished brilliantly for. him. This is ; her best performance as a stayer. TO RACE AT TE RAPA. Latest reports from Te Awamutu credit Pegaway with doing excellent, track work at that centre and he is due to have his first race this season at the Waikato meeting next week. Pegaway has previously put up some good performances on the Te Rapa course and, as he usually races well fresh, it would not surprise to see him showing up at the country meeting! The Lucullus gelding has proved himself a great performer in the past, and as he was not overtaxed last season he should still be equal to holding his own among the .best.

SURE TO GET SUPPORT. Although not engaged at Iliccarton toI day, Lady Pain figures among: the entries for the second and third day oi: the Canterbury meeting. Her engagements include the Fendalton Handicap of one mile and a quarter, the Metropolitan Handicap, one mile" and a half, and the G. G. Stead Cup, one'mile and a quarter;; This mare's form at the.Auckland spring meeting, where she won the King Edward-Memorial, was sufficiently good to warrant her having a chance in any middle distance handicap, and she is sure to get solid support next week..

FINISHED DISAPPOINTINGLY. Protomin't, after his showing in the Members' Memorial at Cambridge on Labour Day, was thought to have a great chance in the Wliangarei Cup. He was "pulling double" along the back and was lying in behind Sir Mond and Gay Cockade as they turned for home. ' His* rider then urged him to the front,,'but Taneriri soon rushed past him, and. from that, time onward he commenced to drop back, finishing nearly last. His display was very disappointing and quite in contrast to his performance' at Cambridge, where similar tactics were employed. On that occasion he galloped over everything at the finish.

SPOON'S PROSPECTS. At the New Zealand Cup meeting last season Spoon won the Stoneyhurst Handicap, one mile, but the Tea. Tray filly will not be seen in action at the coming meeting until next week. She ran third in the Le Bon's Handicap at the Banks Peninsula meeting last Saturday, and as she has been shaping well in her track work since then 'her prospects appear good. Spoon's engagements include the Criterion Handicap on the second day, the Jockey Club and Avon Handicaps on the third day, and.the Cressy and Members' Handicap on the final day. Her last success was in the Craven Plate, run at Iliccarton last February, in which she beat several good handicap horses, and the first time she repeats that form she will be hard to beat.

SHOWED GRIT. Tui Mint ran third in the Maiden Handicap, six furlongs, at the Dargaville meeting at Avondale, and on that showing the son of Catmint looked to have a great show in the Spring Plate, of similar distance, at Whangarei on Thursday. He jumped, away smartly and was soon in front, but dropped back to last near the five-furlong post, when Brazanna came across quickly. He then had to go on the outside, and beat everything but Brazanna. The stewards found that there was no interference, but it certainly looked like it. Tui Mint showed a lot of grit in doing what he did, and only for him losing his place early he would have taken no end of beating. Tui Mint was railed home yesterday.

DESCENDED FROM MARTAGON. Bronze Tray showed galloping ability last season, and he won the Hoanga Handicap, one mile, so easily at the Dargaville meeting at Avondale that he appeared to have a show, among the lightweights in- the Whangarei Cup. Like Yolimond, he was held back for a final dash down the straight, and he went-so —oil.-that he, was only about a length and a half behind Volimond and Taneriri, who finished : almost on terms, the judge deciding 'in favour of Yolimond by a head.- He is by -Tea Tray; from the ' Australian mare Florent, by Bronzino from Bonnie Lily, by Martagon. Martagon was the sire of that great stallion Martian, while Bronzino is the sire of Mister Gamp, winner, of the Great Northern Hurdle Race, and Paul T., a great performer over hurdlias in Australia, who died recently. Bronze Tray I should stay all right. , v . ]

ANTIQUE AUCTIONED. At the "VVailiou stock sale on Friday the Tonbridge gelding Antique was. submitted lor- sale by auction. He was. secured-by the trustees . for the original owner's estate for 300gs, and will remain in J. H. Wallace's* stable at Herriesville. The racing ownership now T>eing established, Antique Will be nominated for events at the Takapuna meeting this month. UNLUCKY TO BE BEATEN. Taneriri waited upon the leaders in the Whangarei Cup till the turn andthen shot past them. *-He seemed to have the race won with less than a hundred yards to. go, was doing so well that his rider did' not seem to worry. However, Volimond put in a great run, and before Taneriri's rider' could get to work again they flashed past the'post, Volimond 1 getting the decision by a head. Taneriri should have Won. , . SHOWED SPEED. ' ' Brazahna showed a lot'of speed-as a two-year-old last season, being placed in two races out of eight starts. This season the daughter of Brazen has not raced much, but she was produced in the Spring Plate at Whangarei on Thursday. Though she did not begin as quickly at Tui Mint, she was well clear crossing the top, and had that much advantage that, though inclined to run about in the straight, had no difficulty in winning by a couple of lengths. This, filly, will win better races than that this season, and the racing she has had' at Whangarei will bring her on a lot.
