THE ELECTIONS.
list of candidates. 167 ALREADY ENDORSED. 65 OFFICIAL COALITIONISTS. • FEW MEMBERS UNOPPOSED. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. The announcement yesterday of the first' batch of official Coalition candidates brings the total of selected and endorsed candidates for the general election to date to 167. The list, which i 3 published for the first time to-day, comprises 65 official Coalitionists, including Mr. W. H. Murray (Grey Lynn), •whose name the party leaders inadvertently omitted from tlio announcement, 48 Labour nominees, 20 Independents, seven Country party representatives, five Independent Eeformers, four Independent Uniteds, five Coalitionists (selected, but not yet endorsed), one Independent' United Coalitionist, one Independent Reform Coalitionist, four Independent Liberals, two Independent j Labour supporters, two Fusionists. one National Government candidate, onej Women's candidate, and one Communist. I
Of the official Coalitionists 35 are Reformers and 30 Uniteds. Including unofficial nominees who have not announced their retirement from the contest in favour of endorsed Coalitionists the list reaches a total of 200. The five Coalitionists chosen by joint conferences of parties in the districts concerned, but not yet officially endorsed are Messrs. C. E. Jones, CR (Avon), W. McOhesney, CU (In-. ver'cargill), J. R. Butler, CR (Napier), R S. Black, CU (Dunedin North), and H. R. Everett, CR (Nelson). If their endorsement be assumed the official Coalitionists will number 70, thus • leaving only ten seats in which; candidates have not been endorsed. In half of these—Auckland West, Manukau, Timaru, Wellington East, and Wellington South —agreements have still tdv.be reached as to which nominee, United or Reform, shall go ahead.' ' Candidates Unopposed. Qf the remaining seats, the Hon. J. 0. Cobbe (Oroua) is so far unopposed; Auckland Central will be contested by a Uniled Coalitionist yet to be chosen. Sir Chaxles Statliam will not be opposed by Reform or United in Dunedin Central; Mr. W. J. Poison may be given a free run for Stratford; and no decision has been made respecting Westland, at : present held by Mr. J. O'Brien (Labour). There is. every probability, therefore, that an official Coalitionist will be standing in practically every constituency.
At the. 1928 general election 212 candidates went to the poll, and the number on the present occasion, while perhaps nofcreaching that total, will be considerably, increased by the time nominations close. The main representation at the previous poll' was: Reform 67, United 55,- Labour 55, Independent Reform S, Independent Labour 4, Independent United 1, Independents 11, Country 5.
'An asterisk .(*) denotes sitting members,- and a dagger (t) candidates who havo previously sat in the House. Party representation is indicated thus: Official United Coalitionist, CU; Official Reform Coalitionist, CR; Independent Goalitionist; 10; Unitedj Uj Reform, R; Labour, E; Independent, I; Country, CP; Liberal, Lib; Fusionist, F; National Government, NG; Women's, W; Communisit, Coin.
