ELLERSLIE BY-ELECTION.

At the Ellerslie Town Boad by-election held yesterday Mr. S. Somerfield was returned with 172 votes, a majority of seven over Mr. J. J. Toy, who polled

185. The order of the remaining four candidates was: Mr. G. J. Thorpe, 85 votes; Mr. W. Ryan, 60; Mr. A. G. Parsons, 56; Mr. H. I. Simpson, 39. The vacancy was caused by the resignation of Mr. J. W. Morgan. About one-third of the 1600 voters in the district voted at the poll.
