SWIMMING.

AUCKLAND CENTRE'S MEETING

NO STATE TUITION FUNDS

MR. L. BRIGHTON A LIFE MEMBER. Mr. E. ft. Potter presided at the annual meeting of the Auckland Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association last night, when the economic depression And the financial position of some clubs were mentioned as the causes which prevented the complete success of the 1930-31 season. Eleven clubs affiliated with the centre during the season, and, unfortunately, mainly on account of the high cost of promoting carnivals, almost every club recorded A loss on its activities.

Addressing the delegates, Mr. L.- Brighton, educational Officer, stated that, as the Government had suspended its annual grant and the New Zealand Council and the Centres affiliated to it have exhausted ail their funds available for instructing School children in swimming, lie could see no hope of the instruction scheme being continued this summer. The number of certificates issued in the past season to the children of 149 schools for swimming various distances totalled 3702.

Splendid results had attended the efforts of the Auckland Primary Schools' Swimming Association, which, although several city schools had so far failed to become affiliated to it, had already issued 035 certificates in one year.

Mr. Brighton added that in the course of his duties he had received the enthusiastic co-operation Of the physical instructors of the Education Department, who advocated the value of the scheme in the country districts, and also ot' the principal and students at the Training College. As every Student waft required to be a qualified Swimmer, Mr, Brighton expressed the hope that they would impart their knowledge of the art to all the children who came under their charge ill future. By doing this they would compensate in some measure for the loss of the swimming association's national coaching scheme, Which, unless the Government renewed the grant, would have to be definitely suspended. On the motion of the president, Mr. E. 11. Potter, the centre decided to send a copy of Mr. Brighton's report to the Minister of Education and each of the party leaders in support of the New Zealand Swimming Association's claims to a renewal of the grant. Mr. Brighton tendered his resignation as CduiWtional officer, and in recognition of his Services was elected a life-member uf the centre. A request from the Canterbury Centre for the centre's support toward effecting the abolition of the levy imposed on all clubs for the benefit: of the overseas representation fund, which is used to defray the expenses of touring swimmers, was rejected. A deputation was appointed to approach the City Council with a view to obtaining a. reduction in the charge for hiring the Tepid Bath for carnivals. The deputation will also drew the council's attention to the dancer caused by the shallow depth of the water, which threatens bathers who use the diving boards at the Shelly" Beach and Paruell BatliS. •
