LEAGUE OF NATIONS.
EXPENSE OF SECRETARIAT
PROTEST AGAINST INCREASE.
(By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.)
WELLINGTON, this day.
A protest against the increasing demand for contributions toward the expenses of the League of Nations' secretariat at Geneva has been made by the Government, according to a statement by Mr. Forbes in the House.
An explanation of the increase in the Dominion's- contribution, as revealed in the Estimates, was sought by Mr. J. S. Fletcher (Independent, Grey Lynn), who pointed out that the amount this year was £12,150, as compared with £10,916 last year.
Mr. Forbes said New Zealand was liable for an.annual payment, and the sum on the Estimates represeuted New Zealand's proportion for this year. The Government could not understand why the expenses had increased, and it was beyond its power to make a reduction. "We have already made a. protest," he said, "but the bill for our share of the expenses is sent in, and we have to pay it." He agreed that the increase was not satisfactory. , Apart from whether it was a good investment or not, there was no justification for the increasing expenditure. The number of permanent salaried officers at Geneva seemed to be increasing year by year. v
