WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.
MARERETU.
A meeting to establish a branch of the women's institute for the district was held at Mrs. Edwards' residence on October 28. Mrs. Ariel I, president of the Papajroa branch, opened proceedings, and the women's institute song was joined in by all present. Mrs. Ariell outlined the aims of the movement, and quoted one of the mottoes, "If you know a good thing, pass it on." Mrs. H. Tibbits gave an address on "Elocution." The following were elected officers: President, Mrs. Edwards; vice-president, Mrs. Cedric Jenkins; secretary, Miss N. Burke; treasurer, Mrs. Levy. The committee consists of the officers and Miss Dorothy Ball. The trading table was commenced, and Mesdames W. Hudspeth and Pearse were appointed in charge. Afternoon tea was provided by the members
MAMAKU.
An enjoyable evening was spent at Mamaku on Friday, when Miss Stops, Dominion organiser, opened a branch. Forty-eight-members were enrolled, and the following committee was" elected: — President, Mrs. Sibley; vice-president, Mrs. Faulkner; secretary, Mrs. Gallagher; Miss I. Civil, Mrs. Thorne and Mrs. Cowper. After an interesting talk on the aims an<J doings of institutes in various parts of the world a number of exhibits were shown and proved of great interest. It was decided to link up with an institute at Tockenham, in England, that being the only one _ at Home where a member had a relative. After supper Miss Stops gave a demonstration of folk dancing. Institute songs and loud applause brought the meeting to a close.
OMAHA AND PAKIRI, At a meeting held in the Leigh Hall Mrs. G. B. White presided and Mrs. W. F. Harper sang. It was decided _to accept Warkwortk invitation to their birthday celebrations. A flower show is arranged to be held at the November meeting. An institute social is to be held on October 30, with ballet dancing, choruses, dialogues and musical items. A special feature, of the meeting was the visit of Miss Stops, Dominion organiser, who gave an address on the working and aims of the Women's Institute. She also exhibited a collection of arts and crafts made by members of different institutes in England and New Zealand, which was eagerly inspected by all. A disarmament petition was on the table for signatures. Mrs. Bathgate w T as in charge of a well laden stall. A delicious afternoon tea was dispensed by the hostesses, Mesdames J. Wyatt, T. H. Ashton, and Misses R. Matheson and v A. Fecht. GREENHITHE. The October meeting was held in the
public hall on the 21st to meet Miss Stops, the organiser, but owing to the inclemency of the weather older members were kept away. The meeting opened with the singing of the Canadian Institute song, the music of which was composed by a member of a New Zealand institute. All stood in silence as a mark of condolence for the relatives of a late member who had recently passedon. The remainder of the afternoon was
given up to a display of handcraft. Miss Stops explained the materials and manufacture of most of the articles, and also gave many helpful suggestions in regard to the working of institutes in as based upon the ideals of tiie founders. Before tlie meeting closed the lady was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for coming again to Greenhithe and enter- ! taining the company in such an instructive manner. Miss Waite ana Mrs. Hutchins were the tea hostesses.
