AUCKLAND PROVINCE VOTES
COMPARISONS WITH LAST YEAH.
Appropriations for the construction and improvement of main highways throughout New Zealand, as proposed in the Public Works Estimates, are less by £390,000 than those provided in the estimates for the previous _ year. The vote for the current year is £540,000, as against £930,000 voted last year, of which £757,906 was expended.
For the maintenance of, main highways the vote is £1,300,000 —£72,000 more than was voted last year, when the actual expenditure under this heading was £1,091,362 The Main Highways Board proposes to make a number of free grants from the construction fund, but most of the votes to highway districts are to be in the form of subsidies, ranging from £1 for £1 to £5 for £1.
For the No. 1 highway district (Auckland North) the vote is £48,756, against £60,679 last year. For the No. 2 district. (Auckland South) £100,687 is voted (£99,933). In the Tauranga district £15,136 will be expended, and in the Gisborne • district £58,305. For the Auckland-Wellington (via Taranaki) route there are votes of £9137 in the King Country district, £5130 in the Taranaki district, £18,132 in the Wanganui district,, and £32,512 in the Wellington West district.
A sum of £4000 for the National Park-Taupo road is voted in the King Country district, and . £8715 for the Bulls-Taumarunui road in the Wanganui district.
